I’m in love. I have finally found something I really want to play with.
I have both a set of RXT and NXT LEGO MindStorms robotics kits, and haven’t really done much with them. Did a Goggle there and found that there are established projects for creating a Chrome app to communicate with your NXT. What I’ve always wanted to do is go a step further and throw a webcam on it, possibly some sort of robotic driving, sentry patrol kind of thing, purely for the craic of it, cos hey – I’m a nerd. Really looking forward to starting it, it’s going to be great.
November is fast creeping up on us again, bringing with it the promise of ridiculous facial hair (or for some of us less fortunate men, any facial hair at all..) in aid of cancer research. I have setup a page on the Movember website for people to make donations to if they so wish, and even register to take part [http://mobro.co/LordShaveUs]! The usual rules will apply, participants must be clean shaven on the morning of November the 1st, and no shaving of the moustache thereafter. Any donations are very very gratefully received.
To add to our embarrassment, this year Paul O’Shea and I will be dying our flamboyant heads of hair disgraceful colours in aid of Shave or Dye [also a cancer charity]. I will be going Spring Green in contrast to Paul’s Fire Red. It will look hideous and we will probably make small children cry in the streets. For this 4 week’s worth of abject humiliation we beg your indulgence and more money. It’s all for a good cause -> forcing me into a haircut. Yes, you heard correctly – at the end of this 4 weeks of shocking unprofessionalness I will be shaving it all off. I will be as bald as a really bald thing, and probably scare even more kids, but that’s just a bonus.
So I’ve started the current 6 week challenge over on Nerd Fitness. You set goals and track them and blah blah, but the goals I’ve set this time are definitely doable..
Looking forward to seeing how I get on with it. Even if I didn’t actually succeed it will still be good for me to do!
So I decided, after my hosting provider decided that the version of WordPress they were offering was compatible with the version of php they were offering (not so much), that instead of just patching things together I would try to go the whole hog and build a site from the ground up using my nas to host, my own domain, and node.js and to build it.
Easier said than done.
My nas does run Linux, but a restricted version. This means I can’t just hit apt-get for latest and greatest packages. In some cases latest and greatest doesn’t even come close. In order to build node I’m having to compile parts of the tool chain on the box, fairly basic bits that are giving me WTF moments. PHP – OK I can deal with that, might not have been updated in a while. But there are others of a more dark and desperate nature that I never wanted to see the inside of their .config files.
But, like the title says, Hack It All. No More Complaining. So once more into the breach.
… pray for Buffy …
Threw an entry about a Processing sketch I did long long ago for a text book over on https://buffini.wordpress.com/coding/processing/. Feel free to read, comment or anything else and let me know what you think 🙂
